A quick Google search for something generic like &#8216;bulk sms&#8217; reveals a huge range of providers. Having had a quick look through a couple of pages of search results, you&#8217;ll probably arrive at a decent shortlist of half a dozen possible suppliers.</p>
<p>Having established your short list of  bulk sms companies, you&#8217;ll then probably look at details such as the system itself, pricing, support and so on. There are 2 things that you should watch out for though, that might not be immediately apparant when you&#8217;re making your decision about which bulk <a href="http://www.textmarketer.co.uk">sms service</a> to use.</p>
<h3><strong>Expiring Credits</strong></h3>
<p>About 30% of bulk sms suppliers operate a curious policy of expiring sms credits. If you don&#8221;t use your bulk sms credits in a given period (usually 12 months), then your unused credits just disappear. We&#8217;ve always felt this a particularly harsh approach. After all you&#8217;ve purchased your bulk sms credits, it would seem reasonable to have as long as you want to use them. <h3>Unclear Pricing</h3>
<p>You&#8217;d expect that when you&#8217;re looking at cost per bulk sms credit, that would mean the cost to send one text. Correct? Not necessarily. There are 2 companies that operate a credits systems where it costs more than one bulk sms text credit to send a message to a UK mobile. So a headline price of say 4.2 pence + VAT per credit may actually cost 6.75 pence + VAT to deliver the text. (1.5 credits needed to send a message to a UK mobile.)</p>
<p>The argument here is that when you have international bulk sms services, there are different prices for different counties so you need a system that can handle this. We&#8217;re not sure that this is the best way though and we know this causes confusion for buyers, It&#8217;s much clearer to have a simple 1 text credit is 1 text sent system.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<h3><strong>Choosing the right supplier from the mobile marketing industry is frankly a bit of a nightmare.</strong></h3>
<p>Companies seem to package things in different ways, have different sms pricing structures and appear to do as much as possible to confuse the hell out of you. There also appears to be a very wide range of prices for what appears to be the same product. Why on earth does it have to be so complicated? Well for companies who are looking for a simple outbound sms solution that allows them to communicate with their customers or staff by text, it really needn&#8217;t be too tough.</p>
<p>There are however a few simple guidelines to buying sms marketing services that we think you need to be aware of. (If at this point you&#8217;re wondering, &#8216;o I see what they&#8217;re doing here, they&#8217;re gong to explain it all in simple terms and then surprise surprise, their solution is going to be the best one&#8217;, well you&#8217;re absolutely correct! But hold fire with the cynicism, we genuinely believe that this information will be useful, even if you unwisely decide not to choose Text Marketer as your sms provider.)</p>
<h3>Guideline number 1.<br />
Beware the sms credit.</h3>
<p>We&#8217;ve come across a number of text marketing companies that quote their services on a per credit basis. Sounds reasonable, 1 credit means 1 text right? Wrong, unless you happen to be sending your messages to Dubai that is. Be warned that to send sms messages to the UK networks may require using 1.7 or 1.8 credits. So what on face of it might appear to be an amazing deal, actually turns out to cost nearly double what you had expected.</p>
<h3>Guideline number 2.<br />
Don&#8217;t buy before you tried!</h3>
<p>When you choose a text messaging company you&#8217;re making a reasonable commitment, so it&#8217;s worth getting it right. You should be allowed to test the service, have a play, make sure you&#8217;re happy with everything before you start spending your cash. Does the system do what you want and expect it to? How was your support request handled? Did the support team seem experienced?</p>
<h3>Guideline number 3.<br />
Don&#8217;t reinvent the wheel.</h3>
<p>The chances are that your use for sms marketing will have been done before either for a company in your sector or possibly a competitor. So choose a company who can advise you on the best way to run and structure you campaign. Why make mistakes that have been made before. We&#8217;ve all had the &#8216;rookie error&#8217; experience and they can be costly. (You can always ignore the advice if you don&#8217;t rate it!)</p>
<h3>Guideline Number 4.<br />
Price is important&#8230; but make sure you&#8217;re comparing eggs with eggs</h3>
<p>We all buy on price, it&#8217;s our basic instinct. What makes things slightly more confusing in our industry is that there are a huge number of possible services, and a huge range in the quality of these services. I&#8217;m not just talking here about the &#8216;value added&#8217;, nice to have stuff either, I&#8217;m referring to the basic reliability of being able to send a text and it actually arriving on the phone with no delay.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re buying other telecoms services such as phone lines, the product is pretty much always the same; not so with sms services. There are hundreds of &#8216;gateways&#8217; that sms providers can use to access the UK mobile networks. Some of these are woefully unreliable and do not support even the most basic tools such as delivery reporting and sender ID, (who the message is from.)</p>
<p>It won&#8217;t be a surprise to learn that the lower quality gateway can be offered at a lower price than premium gateways. For some applications, where a client is sending hundreds of thousands of messages a month, then these gateways make perfect sense, but for many companies who might be sending a few thousand or less, this is a serious false economy. It&#8217;s also worth keeping an eye on how pricing effects your monthly spend on SMS marketing. If you are sending 1000 texts a month, a price difference of 0.6 pence per message makes a whopping Â£6 difference on your monthly spend.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The <a title="iab" href="http://www.iabuk.net/en/1/home.html" target="_blank">IAB</a> and the <a title="dma" href="http://www.dma.org.uk/content/home.asp" target="_blank">DMA</a> recently published some excellent research that explored some of  the reasons why consumers often feel reluctant to opt in to receiving <a title="mobile marketing" href="http://www.textmarketer.co.uk/mobile-marketing-campaign.htm " target="_blank">mobile marketing </a>messages from companies and brands.</p>
<p>They identified 5 barriers that were responsible for repressing the take up of opt in <a title="sms services" href="http://www.textmarketer.co.uk/sms-tools-technology.htm  " target="_blank">sms services</a>.</p>
<p>The full research article is available on the <a title="iab" href="http://www.iabuk.net/en/1/effectivenessofoptinmobileaudience230910.mxs" target="_blank">IAB </a>web site and is well worth a read.</p>
<h3>The 5 barriers to consumer opt-in</h3>
<p><strong>1. Awareness</strong>. 32% of consumers did not know about this type of service, or the benefits associated. The IAB and DMA recommend promoting the mobile marketing service using existing relationships and touchpoints, and welcoming consumers with an initial message once you have their details.</p>
<p><strong>2. Perceived cost</strong>. This remains one of the most significant barriers to getting consumers to opt-in, with many believing that it will cost them money to receive messages from brands  71% of respondents were wary of any costs that may be associated. It is essential that sms services are exceptionally clear in their communications with consumers of the costs associated with mobile messaging, which are often zero and should consider making responses also free.</p>
<p><strong>3. Relevance</strong>. If consumers are to accept brand messages on their mobile devices, they remain adamant that these offers should be relevant and targeted &#8211; 71% saw unwanted sms messages from brands as a real barrier to opting-in. Brands have a real responsibility to let consumers know what kinds of messages they will be receiving, with a clear activation and retention programme.</p>
<p><strong>4. Control</strong>. As always, consumers are keen to retain control over the mobile messages they receive from brands  70% of respondents were concerned about having no control over what was sent to their phone, whilst 61% were worried about not be able to opt-out once having opted-in. Whilst reassuring consumers about the frequency of mobile messages is important, brands are required to adhere to the &#8216;Universal Stop&#8217; policy, which makes unsubscribing easy.</p>
<p><strong>5. Privacy</strong>. In line with digital communications in general, consumers are very conscious of sharing personal information  64% of those surveyed did not want to opt-in to SMS or MMS because they thought they may have to share personal details. From the outset, brands need a clear communication to give consumers confidence that their privacy will be protected, and ask permission before sharing details with any third parties.</p>
<p>Jon Mew, head of mobile for theIAB said: <em>&#8220;The research shows that once the mobile audience are opted-in to your communications, they can be one of the most receptive and engaged groups for brands, with many seeing mobile messaging as the best way to keep informed of relevant offers and services. The challenge now is for marketers to work out the best way to get these people on board  respect them, reassure them, and make sure they know there are no costs associated with this type of marketing to maximise your customer acquisition and retention strategy.&#8221;</em></p>
