The chap I was speaking to was asked to find a new supplier of <a href="http://www.textmarketer.co.uk/bulksms/sms-bulk.htm">bulk sms </a>services for his company. He was basically doing the rounds by ringing up a short list of companies and comparing them on price and a number of other factors.</p>
<p>From what I could gather, we were about the fourth or fifth <a href="http://www.textmarketer.co.uk">business sms </a>company that he&#8217;d called that morning, so he&#8217;d already got a good grasp of what was on offer in the industry.</p>
<p><em>&#8220;What makes Text Marketer different from other companies that I&#8217;ve spoken to?&#8221; </em>he asked. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Since my last rather <a title="text to win competition" href="http://www.textmarketer.co.uk/blog/2010/04/business-sms/how-not-to-run-a-text-to-win-combination-by-coca-cola/" target="_blank">scathing report </a>of Coke&#8217;s text to win competiton in April, I&#8217;ve been keeping a close watch on their latest competitions to see if they have made any improvements. The one that they ran with ASOS required enormous patience and persistence to enter successfully and the clunkiness must have had a bad impact on the overall numbers taking part.</p>
<p>Their latest text to win competition is also a simple enough affair. Text in the code to the 5 digit short code and you have the chance to win a &#8216;Kinect for Xbox&#8217;. My hopes initially rose that this competition was going to be easier to enter. The instructions on the bottle collar were legible enough, although I would have liked to have seen them in a larger and more distinct typeface than the rest of the dull terms and conditions.</p>
<h3>Show me the code</h3>
<p>Now to the competition entry itself. Let&#8217;s hunt down that elusive 12 digit code &#8216;etched on the bottle&#8217; and text it in to 88855. Sounds simple enough. Following my efforts earlier in the year I knew that reading the code was going to require good light and a fair bit of bottle tilting so that the digits could actually be read.</p>

<p>So off comes the label, easy enough, so good so far. Yup, here&#8217;s the code etched on the bottle, now to text it in. Reach for mobile, send message to 88855. Now the code itself NF HH 5 8 or is that a B, no I think its another H. WMHR 8 or B 4.</p>
<p>Right let&#8217;s try that.</p>
<p>An autoresponse arrives a few seconds later..</p>
<p><em>&#8220;Sorry, we didnt recognise your code. Please check the code carefully and try again. For help visit cokezone.co.uk or call customer services on 0800 0288038.&#8221;</em></p>
<p>How helpful. At this point I lost patience and challenged my eagle-eyed daughter to correctly interpret the code and enter the competition. After 3 unsuccessful attempts, she helpfully suggested that if she drank the contents then we may be able to see the code more clearly. Failed attempt number 5 proved this wasn&#8217;t the case. So we all gave up.</p>
<p>So yet again it seems that a simple text to win competition has been truly ruined by longwinded instructions and illegible codes.</p>
<p>Who signed this campaign off for pity&#8217;s sake? I imagine the number of incorrect entries must be colossal and that the customer services number has been swamped with bewildered would-be entrants. I&#8217;d love to know the figures on this.</p>
<p>Coke have simply got come up with a better way of displaying codes. their &#8216;laser etched&#8217; solution sounds cool but just isn&#8217;t practical. There&#8217;s also no need to have such a long code. This increases the chance of user error and challenges the endurance of even the most commited text to win fan.</p>
<p>I await the next Coke competition with interest.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Ronan Shields, mobile expert at New Media Age, wrote an <a title="new media age" href="http://www.nma.co.uk/opinion/mobile-messaging-requires-more-leadership/3018571.article" target="_blank">excellent article </a>last week about how major brands are missing out on the opportuinity that <a title="mobile marketing" href="http://www.textmarketer.co.uk/mobile-marketing-campaign.htm" target="_blank">mobile marketing </a>presents. The main thrust of the article was that media agencies are failing their clients by refusing to buy into the effeciveness of mobile marketing.</p>
<p>The argument was supported by some pretty compelling evidence. At a recent event, the IAB and DMA released research that suggested that over 50% of people would be happy to receive <a title="mobile marketing" href="http://www.textmarketer.co.uk/sms-tools-technology.htm" target="_blank">sms alerts </a>from companies that they already had a relationship with.</p>
<p>The article then went on to identify a few of the barriers to entry for accessing millions of mobile users by SMS, such as the lack of opt in data available and the disjointed nature of the data owners. Ronan suggested that there might be a way for all of the networks to work together to form some kind of single point, where marketers could access targeted mobile data from one place.</p>
<p>While its an interesting idea, I think it totally misses the point. The reason why mobile markeing is so responsive is that we are not all sent endless promotional text alerts (I hesitate to use the word spam.) The crucial point is that consumers would be happy to receive sms alerts <em><strong>from a brand they already have a relationship with</strong></em>. Had the question been, would you like to receive sms alerts from companies who have purchased your mobile number and would like to send you offers? then I suspect the response would have been quite different.</p>
<p>The proliferation of mobile lists that are available for marketers to purchase, will cause enormous problems. Delivery and response rates will drop, spam filters will be introduced, blocking messages from anyone that is not in the mobiles address book and the whole channel will be dogged with the same problems that email has.</p>
<p>Mobile marketing works. It wont continue to work if we wreck it.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Sorry Coke. I know it has become the norm to have a pop at large consumer brands, but honestly, if you&#8217;re going to run a text to win competition, at least have a crack at making it easy for people to enter.</p>
<p>In an idle 10 minutes, my eye was caught by Coke&#8217;s text to win competition where you can win an ASOS outfit every 30 minutes and I thought I&#8217;d see what it was like to enter from a consumer&#8217;s point of view. The answer was terrible&#8217;. Have a look at the label and entry instructions below.</p>

<p>There are so many problems here, it&#8217;s hard to know where to start.</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s kick off with the font size of the instructions. It&#8217;s tiny. I could barely read it. The short code that I was supposed to text my code to was buried in a long paragraph; hardly attention grabbing. There&#8217;s also no contrast between the text colour and the white background, so you have to squint and turn it to the light to make sense of it.</p>
<p>Having read the instructions, my next task as an eager consumer was to identify my code which <em>is etched on the bottle under the label&#8217;</em>. No it isn&#8217;t. I removed the label and there&#8217;s nothing there. Hang on, what&#8217;s that? You&#8217;ve got to be kidding. Barely visible in broad daylight, I could just make out the code against the dark contents.</p>

<p>The code is also absurdly long. It&#8217;s 12 digits! I tried to work out how may possible code combinations there would be and my calculator returned E.1.032282. So it&#8217;s basically trillions. I know Coke is a massive brand but we&#8217;re not all putting away 100 litres of the stuff a day. The National Lottery makes do with 6 numbers for goodness sake.</p>
<p>There are just so many reasons why you wouldn&#8217;t bother entering this competition. I&#8217;m not suggesting that it has failed but they could have at least doubled their response if they had made it easier to enter.</p>
<p>We&#8217;re currently working with regional brewery Wickwar, who are running a text to win competition on their bottled beer, Banker&#8217;s Draft. We&#8217;ve tried to keep the entry instruction as simple and as clear possible to try to maximise response.</p>
